LONDON (AP) — Kate, the Princess of Wales, made a stirring appearance at Wimbledon, engaging with tennis fans who were queuing to get tickets and taking a moment to sit next to former champion Andy Murray. This event took place during a day dedicated to supporting British players at the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam tournament.

The princess, who publicly announced her cancer was in remission early last year, holds the title of patron of the All England Club. Kensington Palace released a statement detailing her activities, highlighting her visit to “The Queue,” where she spent time meeting attendees who had camped out since the early hours of the morning. Accompanying her were honorary stewards from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), who volunteer annually to manage the queue and welcome guests to the Championships.

Wimbledon offers a limited number of same-day tickets for purchase, prompting fans to line up as early as the night before in nearby Wimbledon Park. In addition to her fan interactions, Kate also contributed her time by assisting in a Wimbledon ticket office. During her visit, she met children from the Shine Camera Club, a local initiative that empowers children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

As Kate made her way past the iconic “Henman Hill” towards Court 18, a crowd formed to see her. She was greeted by All England Club chair Deborah Jevans and board member Tim Henman, a former Wimbledon semifinalist after whom the grassy area is named. On Court 18, British player Arthur Fery was competing against Otto Virtanen in a closely contested match. Fery ultimately triumphed with scores of 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-3.

Following the match, Kate attended the match between British player Katie Swan and American Madison Keys at No. 1 Court, where she took her seat next to Andy Murray. In 2013, Murray became the first British man to win the Wimbledon singles title in 77 years. Unfortunately for Swan, she lost the match with scores of 6-1, 6-4. Notably, neither Swan nor Fery were aware that the princess was in attendance during their respective matches.

After the match, Swan expressed her surprise upon learning Kate had been watching, stating, “I heard after that she was there. It’s probably a good thing I didn’t know, otherwise I might have been a bit more nervous.” She went on to share her desire to meet the princess one day, calling her “such an inspiring person.” Similarly, Fery remarked that it was “an honor” to play in front of Kate and joked that had he known she was there, it might have made him feel more pressure, as he was completely focused during the match and didn't notice the crowd's excitement.

Kate attended Wimbledon last year on consecutive days to present trophies to the singles champions, Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner. During that event, she provided words of comfort to women’s runner-up Amanda Anisimova after her loss to Swiatek with a score of 6-0, 6-0. In 2024, despite recovering from cancer, Kate did not attend the women’s final but was present to witness Carlos Alcaraz’s victory over Novak Djokovic.

With her continued involvement in events at Wimbledon and her focus on supporting tennis among British youth, Kate, the Princess of Wales, shows her dedication not only to the sport but to community initiatives aimed at uplifting children and provide them with opportunities.
