Devastating Fire Claims 28 Lives in Bangkok Bar

A tragic fire erupted at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao music bar in Bangkok on Sunday night, resulting in the deaths of at least 27 people and leaving 25 more hospitalized in critical condition. This incident marks the deadliest blaze in Thailand’s capital in 17 years. The fire broke out shortly before midnight in a northern part of Bangkok and took approximately half an hour for firefighters to bring under control.

The bar, known as a brewery or beer hall, was reportedly designed to accommodate up to 600 customers. However, the number of patrons present during the fire remains unclear. According to Bangkok’s Erawan emergency services center, a total of 73 individuals sustained injuries from the incident, with 25 classified as critically injured. By Monday evening, the Bangkok city government reported an updated death toll of 28, indicating a grim aftermath.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that most fatalities were attributed to smoke inhalation. As investigations began, forensic teams cordoned off the site early Monday morning. Photographs revealed the bar’s windows blown out, with debris such as charred television sets, speakers, and even an electric guitar scattered across the sidewalk. The devastation inside was apparent, with burned tables still holding empty beer bottles.

Reports indicated that many victims were trapped in windowless bathrooms near an exit. Thai national police chief Kittharath Punpetch noted that most of the deceased were found in these bathrooms, where they had likely sought refuge from the flames. Investigators are examining the possibility that an obstruction, such as a tables set up in the hall, prevented patrons from accessing the exit. Additionally, there are indications that some exit doors may have been locked, further complicating escape efforts.

The investigation is particularly focused on the ceiling above the performance stage, where investigators discovered materials that could have served as flammable decorative elements. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul revealed that a musician performing at the bar reported seeing smoke emanating from a circuit breaker near the stage just before the power went out and an explosion was heard, after which thick smoke rapidly filled the venue.

As the community mourns the loss, Buddhist monks visited the scene to pray for the deceased. Nurses handed out face masks to locals affected by the lingering smoke from the fire. A registration area was established to help family members seeking information about their loved ones.

Singer Sukanya Wongwongwai, who was performing nearby, rushed to the scene upon hearing about the fire, only to find that several of her bandmates were performing at the bar. Tragically, one member was reported dead, while three were hospitalized, and one was initially unaccounted for. Sukanya later learned that the missing bandmember was also found in the hospital.

Family members of the victims gathered at Bangkok’s Institute of Forensic Medicine to identify their loved ones. One woman, referred to by her nickname, Nid, identified both her daughter and son-in-law among the deceased. She expressed her heartbreak, recalling how her daughter had recently started working as a computer teacher after graduating. Another individual, Keo Oudone Poungpany, described how he lost his younger brother in the fire, recounting how he was unable to return to help amidst the chaos as patrons fled from the flames.

The Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar had previously struck a sorrowful note in the country’s history of tragic incidents; in 2022, a similar fire claimed 14 lives at a music bar in eastern Thailand. This recent disaster serves as a grim reminder of safety concerns in entertainment venues, especially following a major fire during a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Santika nightclub in 2009, which resulted in 67 deaths.

A statement from the bar expressed condolences and stated their commitment to cooperating fully with investigators. The owner of the bar is currently hospitalized with severe injuries sustained in the fire. The community and authorities now face the grim task of uncovering the cause of this devastating incident.
