PARIS (AP) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Paris on Monday to seek assistance from two dozen European leaders, focusing on developing countermeasures against Russia's ballistic missile threat. While Zelenskyy engaged leaders in Paris, European foreign ministers convened separately in Brussels, expected to discuss Ukraine's defense needs and the threats posed by Russia. After his arrival, Zelenskyy underscored, “Our top priority is anti-ballistic defense,” as he looks to accelerate plans for joint initiatives with European countries to fortify air defenses ahead of the harsh winter months, during which Russia typically amplifies its attacks to disrupt essential services for Ukrainians.
The proposed Anti-Ballistic Program, aimed to be presented to government officials, national security advisers, and potential defense contractors, aims to garner support for enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump's recent commitment to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot air defense systems could represent a significant breakthrough. However, experts caution that actual production could take years, leaving questions about the pace at which new European defense systems could be deployed.
Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron, while the Ukrainian military is to participate in France's national holiday celebrations on Bastille Day.
