Hamilton police have taken a significant step in addressing fraud targeting vulnerable individuals with the arrest of a woman from Niagara Falls, following an extensive investigation into an alleged romance scam. The investigation, which began in December 2025, focused on a case involving a 75-year-old man from Hamilton.
According to a statement released by the Hamilton police, the victim met the suspect, identified as Vicky Medalla, in March 2025. The two developed a relationship that would soon take a troubling turn. Over the following months, Medalla allegedly manipulated the victim into providing her with approximately $20,000, claiming that she needed financial assistance for her parents' funeral expenses. She assured the victim that the money would be repaid, which, as the investigation revealed, was not the case.
Officials expressed their concern regarding the deceptive methods employed by Medalla to obtain funds from the victim. The police emphasized that the money was acquired through fraudulent means, leading to the investigation's focus on Medalla's activities and their impact on the elderly victim.
On July 22, 2026, officers took action, arresting Medalla at the scene and charging her with fraud over $5,000. This charge highlights the severity of the alleged crime and the lengths to which individuals may go to exploit others, particularly vulnerable adults. The case raises important discussions about the need for greater awareness and protective measures for individuals who may be targeted by similar scams.
At the time of her arrest, Vicky Medalla, 58, was reportedly already on two separate forms of judicial release in connection with similar alleged offenses in Kitchener and Hamilton. This factor played a crucial role in the police's decision to oppose her release on bail, citing the repeated nature of her alleged fraudulent activities.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and the role law enforcement plays in protecting citizens from fraudulent schemes that exploit trust and emotional connections. As law enforcement agencies continue to address and investigate such crimes, the Hamilton police's actions in this case reflect a proactive approach to safeguarding the community, particularly its elderly residents.
