Sydney Towle, a 26-year-old social media content creator known for her unwavering optimism while documenting her life with cancer, has passed away, as confirmed by her family. Towle was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer affecting the bile ducts, in August 2023. Her family, including her mother, Elizabeth Morrow, and brother, Austin Towle, shared the news of her death through a video posted on her TikTok account.
Her brother stated that "Syd went peacefully last night after an almost three-year long battle with cholangiocarcinoma." He expressed pride in her relentless fight against the disease and gratitude for the support they received over the years. Her mother added that they are thankful for the outpouring of messages and that "she will not be forgotten."
Described by her family as "an endless ray of sunshine," Sydney Elizabeth Towle was born on November 15, 1999, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and was raised in Hobe Sound, Florida. Reports indicate that she passed away at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
Before her diagnosis, Towle had already established a significant social media presence, sharing glimpses of her everyday life, particularly enjoying the beach and the outdoors. She was passionate about surfing and running. Following her diagnosis at the age of 23, she candidly documented the reality of living with cancer while maintaining her hobbies, stylish appearance, and a positive outlook. At the time of her death, she had over 1 million followers on TikTok.
In her early posts after the diagnosis, Towle expressed her determination to stay positive, saying, "I'm in good spirits, I'm smiling. If anything, it just makes me appreciate life more." This message became a guiding principle for her online presence, where she shared not only joyful moments of running and outings with friends, but also vulnerable times spent in a hospital bed and at chemotherapy appointments.
In a February column advocating for increased funding for research on cholangiocarcinoma, Towle’s mother highlighted her daughter’s influence, stating that she had become "a beacon of hope for so many" through her honest sharing. Thousands of people reached out to Towle, either by sending her messages, stopping her on the street, or leaving comments on her videos, indicating how her openness had helped them with their struggles.
Towle graduated from Dartmouth College in 2022, where she majored in government and environmental studies. Subsequently, she was employed as a social media manager at Epic Games. Additionally, she had made plans to run the 2026 New York City Marathon in November to raise funds for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, already collecting over $10,000 for the nonprofit, which advocates for research and provides resources for patients and caregivers.
Reflecting on her marathon goal, she noted, "I know it might seem crazy to try to run a marathon with everything going on." However, she also emphasized the significance of hope, stating, "Hope keeps us alive, it keeps us going, it makes the impossible seem possible."
Sydney Towle is survived by her mother and brother. Her father, Philip Towle, passed away in 2016.
