Toronto police have announced that two additional individuals have been charged in relation to a willful promotion of hatred investigation following a demonstration that targeted the Jewish community earlier this year. This incident occurred on March 15, specifically in the Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West neighborhood, where a demonstration was held.
According to police reports, multiple individuals accused of participating in the demonstration allegedly retrieved anti-Semitic signs from a storage locker on the day of the event. They joined other protestors and displayed these signs in front of both members of the public and supporters of Israel in the area. During the march towards the supporters of Israel, the demonstrators reportedly shouted derogatory slurs.
In April and June, a total of six individuals were charged with wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred related to this incident. Three of the co-accused also faced charges for disguise with intent. Toronto Police Chief Demkiw commented on these arrests in June, emphasizing that law enforcement would persistently seek to hold those who commit hate crimes accountable. He stated, “This is an example of what we mean when we say that arrests and charges can come at any time after an incident.”
On a recent update provided by the Toronto police, it was reported that officers executed a search warrant and arrested two additional suspects as part of the ongoing investigation. The individuals charged are identified as Daniela Bonamico and Shahram Nayeb-Yazdi. Both individuals are facing charges of wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred and were scheduled to appear in a Toronto bail court on Saturday.
