This weekend marks the first full weekend of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), coinciding with an array of festivals, concerts, and sporting events taking place across Toronto. As a result, the city's transit systems are expected to be heavily utilized, and drivers should prepare for significant delays.
Among the major events, K-pop sensation BTS is set to perform at Rogers Stadium in North York for two nights, Saturday and Sunday, as part of their ARIRANG World Tour. In downtown Toronto, Ed Sheeran is bringing his LOOP Tour to Rogers Centre, with performances scheduled through Saturday before he moves on to Detroit. Meanwhile, the RBC Amphitheatre will host HUGEL on Saturday night, followed by a headlining show from Jimmy Eat World on Sunday. In the realm of sports, the Toronto Argonauts will face off against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday.
In anticipation of the increased demand on public transit, TTC CEO Mandeep Lali has indicated that strategies developed for the FIFA World Cup earlier this summer will be implemented once again. “We will have our rapid response teams, the Dufferin Express routes, and the 509 and 511 routes in operation,” Lali announced. “Customer service agents will be onboard to assist with any issues that may arise during the weekend.”
Similarly, Metrolinx will enhance its services with additional trains on the Lakeshore West and East lines over the weekend, extending service hours and deploying more buses from Union Station. In addition to these transit adjustments, city officials have enacted measures to facilitate smoother movement for both pedestrians and motorists.
Andrew Posluns, the city’s chief congestion officer, stated, “We will be placing traffic agents at busy locations around the city to assist in efficient and effective movement.” He added that signal timings at known congestion points will be optimized to expedite traffic flow. Furthermore, adjustments will be made to signage to aid navigation through congested areas.
As the city prepares for a weekend filled with activities, officials are urging anyone attending events or traveling into the area to allow for ample additional travel time.
