Khoa Tran was convicted of second-degree murder, while his wife, Isabelle Nguyen, was found guilty of being an accessory to murder and for indignity to a human body. The devastating incident occurred in June 2023, when the body of the 56-year-old filmmaker was discovered crammed into a garbage compactor at a townhouse complex located in Liberty Village, Toronto.
According to prosecutors, the brutal killing stemmed from an escalating dispute between Tran and Habib, ignited by barbecue smoke wafting from Tran's apartment below Habib's unit. This seemingly trivial disagreement escalated into a tragic event with irreversible consequences.
During the proceedings, emotional victim impact statements were shared in a Toronto courtroom. Friends and family members of Reeyaz Habib reflected on the profound pain and trauma they have endured since his horrific murder. Pat Smith, a close friend of Habib, expressed his heartbreak, stating, “I’ve spent the last three years wondering ‘what the heck happened to my friend?’ He was such a kind, funny, charismatic, calm person.
