Police in the Niagara Region announced that one of their own officers has been charged with impaired driving following a series of events that escalated from an attempted traffic stop to a serious collision. The incident occurred on Thursday, around 8:20 p.m., in Niagara-on-the-Lake, when law enforcement received reports regarding a potentially impaired driver.
The officers attempted to intercept a grey Dodge Ram pickup truck in the vicinity of Glendale Avenue and Taylor Road after they were alerted to its erratic behavior. However, the driver did not comply with the police's signals to stop, prompting a pursuit. Due to safety concerns for the public, the police opted to terminate the chase shortly after it began.
Moments later, the pickup truck collided with another vehicle, leading to a significant turn of events. The driver of the pickup, later identified as Paul-Andre Seguin, a 54-year-old resident of Fort Erie, was apprehended at the site of the accident. He was subsequently taken to the hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries sustained during the collision.
Paul-Andre Seguin has been a member of the Niagara Regional Police Force for 21 years, which adds a complicated layer to the case given his standing within the community. Following his arrest, he was charged with several offenses, including impaired operation of a conveyance, flight from a peace officer, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
In light of the charges and the circumstances surrounding the incident, Seguin has been suspended with pay while an investigation is conducted. In addition, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its investigative mandate due to the injuries Seguin reportedly sustained during the crash, indicating that there may be more to the circumstances during the attempted traffic stop and subsequent collision.
As of now, police have confirmed that no injuries were reported among other individuals involved in the incident aside from Seguin.
