A tragic accident occurred in South Florida, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, including a promising 20-year-old woman, Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, who was the copilot of a Learjet that crashed while en route from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. The incident took place on a Sunday near West Palm Beach, as confirmed by Filgueiras’ mother, Camila Corteleti, in statements to various media outlets.
Nathalia Filgueiras, who earned her pilot's license in 2023 while still a senior at West Boca Raton Community High School, had been a licensed pilot since her teenage years. Local reports highlight her achievement of gaining her license at the young age of 17. This accident marks a tragic event for her family and friends, who remember her as an aspiring aviator with great potential.
The crash not only claimed Filgueiras’ life but also that of prominent technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, and their two young children, 4-year-old Emma and 2-year-old Charlie. Additionally, Anita Maria Cetina, who provided care for the Robinson family, was also among the deceased. Another two victims were identified as Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, while the identity of the other pilot remains unknown as of the latest reports.
Adam Robinson was a well-known figure in the tech industry, having co-founded Robly, an email marketing platform, and established Retention.com, a company that connects e-commerce site visitors with their email addresses through technology. Robinson, 45, had recently shared insights about his family life and career on the ProfitLed podcast, expressing contentment with his work-life balance and the joy of living in Aspen, Colorado, where his family thrived.
The loss of Adam Robinson is particularly poignant for the Austin tech community, which has already mourned another entrepreneur, Joshua Baer, who died in a separate plane crash earlier this year. Thom Singer, the CEO of the Austin Technology Council, remarked on Robinson’s significant contribution to the local entrepreneurial ecosystem, referring to him as an integral part of Austin's entrepreneurial fabric.
Nathalia Filgueiras’ pilot license allowed her to co-pilot the jet; however, it did not qualify her to command the flight. The Palm Beach County School District supported her ambition by funding her pilot's license through the high school’s specialized aviation academy, where students received hands-on experience in aviation through simulators and drones. Filgueiras viewed her unique skills with humor, noting the contrast between her ability to fly planes and her struggle with driving a car, as discussed in a past interview with WPEC-TV.
This incident marks a significant and sorrowful moment for the families and communities affected, especially for those who knew Nathalia Filgueiras and Adam Robinson. With the tragic loss of these individuals, the impact of the crash reverberates deeply through the aviation and technology industries, as well as the lives of countless friends and family members left behind.
