A man has been charged, and three other suspects are currently wanted in relation to a high-speed chase that resulted in one suspect's dramatic fall from the Gardiner Expressway on Monday night in Toronto.
According to Toronto police, the incident began just after 11 p.m. in the vicinity of Don Mills Road and Lawrence Avenue. Four male suspects, reportedly traveling in a stolen BMW X5, stopped near a parking lot where a Rolls Royce had just been parked by its owner. Three suspects exited the BMW, brandished a handgun, and demanded the keys from the victim.
After obtaining the keys, the three suspects fled the scene in the Rolls Royce, while the BMW followed. Police began tracking the stolen vehicles as they moved from the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) to the Gardiner Expressway near Spadina Avenue. Officers subsequently executed a high-risk takedown of the driver of the BMW.
During the arrest, the suspect fell from the Gardiner Expressway onto Lake Shore Boulevard below. Emergency services responded, and the individual was taken into custody before being transported to the hospital with serious lower-body injuries sustained from the fall.
The Special Investigations Unit is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspect's fall. In the meantime, the stolen Rolls Royce allegedly crashed through a police barricade and managed to escape the area. However, this vehicle has since been recovered by law enforcement, although all three suspects who fled in it remain at large.
During the arrest of the BMW driver, police reportedly recovered stolen property, indicating a possible link to other crimes. It has been suggested that the suspects were also involved in another attempted vehicle theft that occurred earlier that same evening around 9:30 p.m. at Finch Avenue East and Yonge Street.
The charged individual, Javed Husnain, a 21-year-old from Toronto, is facing multiple charges, which include robbery with violence, robbery with a firearm, and theft of a motor vehicle involving violence. In addition, he is charged with flight while pursued by a peace officer and possession of a device for the purpose of committing theft.
Husnain was scheduled to make a court appearance on the following day. His current medical condition remains unknown, as officials continue to investigate the broader implications of this dramatic incident.
