The Ontario government has announced the introduction of two financial assistance programs aimed at aiding municipalities and businesses in their recovery efforts following a severe ice storm that struck in late March 2025. The resultant inclement weather led to widespread challenges across the region, leaving nearly 400,000 homes and businesses without power and causing extensive damage to property as freezing rain coated parts of Ontario with layers of ice.

In response to the significant impact of the storm, the provincial government is set to implement two one-time financial assistance initiatives. The first program will assist municipalities in managing the costs associated with emergency response and cleanup efforts. These funds will help cover necessary expenses, including the clearing of fallen trees and other debris resulting from the storm's destructive conditions.

The second program targets small businesses, small farms, and not-for-profit organizations, offering financial support of up to $5 million for storm-related cleanup and essential repairs. This assistance is specifically designed to fill the gaps where private insurance may not cover the costs associated with recovery from the storm's effects.

Although the Ontario government has not disclosed a specific amount allocated for these programs, it has indicated that the final funding levels for business assistance will depend on the number of applicants as well as the eligible costs submitted for consideration. As for the municipal funding, it will be determined based on the documented emergency response and recovery costs incurred during the storm.

Eligible businesses and municipalities have until October 31, 2025, to submit their applications for this financial assistance. Given the extent of the damage caused by the ice storm, the government is encouraging prompt applications to ensure timely support for the affected communities and enterprises.
