VICTORIA — The family and friends of 19-year-old Canadian teenager Piper James gathered in Campbell River, B.C. on Vancouver Island to honor her memory during a heartfelt celebration of life. Piper, who was working on K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, tragically passed away while swimming on January 19. Her body was discovered shortly after, near the popular tourist site of the SS Maheno wreck, surrounded by a pack of dingoes.

An autopsy revealed evidence of "pre-mortem" dingo bites; however, it indicated that drowning was the most likely cause of her death. During the service held at Campbell River Baptist Church, Piper's parents delivered emotional eulogies, reflecting on the profound loss they felt and the loving memories they cherished.

Piper’s mother, Angela James, expressed the deep ache of missing her “doodlebug” and “sweet, sweet girl," which she carries every day. "Some moments, it’s quiet," she shared, standing alongside her husband, both visibly attempting to hold back tears. "Others, it takes my breath away, but woven through the pain is gratitude — gratitude that I got to be your mom, that I got to love you, that the world got to know, even for such a short time. You changed me forever. You changed everyone who loved you."

Piper's father, Todd James, fondly recalled the adventures they shared, including rides on motocross bikes. He reflected on the joy of lying in bed with Piper and wrestling with her before she left for Australia. "I loved that with you, Piper — I am going to miss that," he said, conveying the love and close bond they had. He concluded his part of the eulogy with a heartfelt sentiment, "’til we meet again."

In attendance was Taylor Stricker, a friend who had traveled to Australia with Piper. Stricker remembered Piper as someone who lived life with intensity and heart, loving fiercely and encouraging her friends to be brave. "She taught me how to be brave and to lean into life instead of just standing on the edges of it," Stricker remarked, emphasizing the lasting impact Piper had on those around her.

Stricker further noted, “While Piper’s time was far too short, her impact will last forever.” She expressed that Piper would continue to inspire her in moments that call for adventure and fearlessness. “Every road that calls for adventure, every song turned up too loud, every wave that rolls in, and every moment I choose to be fearless because of her, I will carry her with me for the rest of my life.”

The tragic incident surrounding Piper’s death highlights not only the unpredictability of life but also the joy and love she brought to her family and friends during her short time on Earth. Their shared memories and heartfelt tributes serve as a testament to the vibrant spirit that Piper James embodied.
