On February 10, 2023, a tragic shooting incident occurred in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, claiming the lives of eight individuals, including 12-year-old Abel Mwansa Jr. The boy's father, Abel Mwansa, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the governments of Zambia and Canada, as well as to local MP Bob Zimmer and others, for their assistance in repatriating his son’s body back home. This support is especially significant as the Mwansa family had relocated from Zambia to Tumbler Ridge earlier in 2023 in search of better career opportunities.
Abel Mwansa Jr. was among the many victims who fell victim to the violent act perpetrated by Jesse Van Rootselaar. The incident unfolded when Van Rootselaar fatally shot her mother and 11-year-old half-brother at their residence before proceeding to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where she killed five students and an educational assistant, before turning the weapon on herself.
The return of Abel's body was formalized through a post from the Zambian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, indicating that his remains were flown back on Saturday. The body was received at the airport by a delegation that included Mulambo Haimbe, Zambia's foreign affairs minister, and Corry Van Gaal, Canada’s chargé d'affaires. Van Gaal conveyed his deep sorrow regarding the tragedy and offered his condolences to the Mwansa family, wishing them strength as they prepare for the funeral service planned for Monday in Kitwe, Zambia.
In a poignant social media post, Abel's father reflected on his daily grief, expressing that he often feels his son is still participating in school, church, or community events. He described his profound sorrow, sharing that he weeps uncontrollably even in his dreams. Such expressions of despair highlight the deep emotional impact the loss of a child can have on a parent.
The Mwansa family, now grappling with this profound loss, has been supported by friends and community members. Christopher Bwalya, a close family friend, described Abel Mwansa Jr. as a "respectful" and "responsible" child, emphasizing that his death has left an indelible mark of sadness on the community, with many shedding tears over the loss.
The shooting incident has not only affected the Mwansa family but has also resonated throughout Tumbler Ridge, which is grappling with the aftermath of such a tragic event. As the community comes together to mourn, the Mwansa family prepares for a befitting farewell to their beloved son, ensuring that his memory is honored in a manner reflective of the love and pride they held for him.
