Reports indicate that Hegseth relayed details concerning planned airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen to a chat group on Signal, which included close associates such as his wife and brother. This sensitive information was extracted from a secure military communications channel operated by U.S. Central Command, raising serious concerns regarding security breaches within the Pentagon.
The information reportedly detailed specific launch and bomb-drop times, which multiple officials have classified as highly sensitive. Notably, a source familiar with the Signal chat affirmed to news outlets that the details shared were identical to previous highly classified operations concerning Yemen. An initial leak involving Hegseth also caused significant turmoil, as it accidentally included media personnel and has subsequently prompted an investigation by the Defense Department’s inspector general.
Hegseth has not publicly acknowledged his role in initiating the second chat, which featured over a dozen participants, including family members and legal counsel. He attributed the leak to disgruntled former staff members, distancing himself from any wrongdoing. In interviews, Hegseth has vehemently denied that the shared information was classified, clarifying that “nobody is texting war plans.” He emphasized that the content involved informal, unclassified communications meant for media coordination.
Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta characterized Hegseth's actions as a serious breach of security protocol, especially given the specificity of the operational details involved.
