A swimmer was rescued from a near-drowning incident at Port Dover Beach on Lake Erie, thanks to the quick thinking and actions of a 12-year-old family member. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that emergency services were alerted just after 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, when they received a call regarding a 65-year-old man who had suffered a medical episode while swimming in the lake.

Upon recognizing the signs of distress, the young family member intervened promptly by pulling the man back to shore. This immediate action helped prevent what could have been a fatal incident. Their involvement was crucial, as it provided the man with the opportunity to receive necessary assistance.

Once the man was safely on the shore, a nearby bystander stepped in to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Thanks to their swift response and first aid skills, the swimmer was successfully revived before paramedics arrived to take him to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported following the incident, highlighting the importance of prompt action in emergencies.

The Norfolk OPP conveyed their commendation for the remarkable bravery and quick response of both the young rescuer and the bystander involved in the rescue. In their release, the police emphasized the critical role that individuals can play in emergency situations and the importance of acting swiftly when witnessing someone in distress.

In light of this incident, the OPP took the opportunity to remind the public about water safety protocols. They strongly encourage swimmers to wear personal flotation devices (PFDs) for added safety, always swim with companions to ensure that help is available if needed, and, whenever possible, choose locations that are supervised by trained lifeguards. Such precautions can significantly reduce the risks associated with swimming, especially in natural bodies of water like Lake Erie.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that immediate and decisive actions can have during emergencies. The young boy’s alertness and quick response, combined with the bystander's willingness to act, undoubtedly saved a life that day. Community awareness and proactive safety measures are essential to prevent similar incidents and ensure a safe environment for all individuals enjoying water activities.
