International music superstar The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye in Scarborough, received the Key to the City of Toronto on Saturday as he gears up for four highly anticipated shows at the Rogers Centre over the next two weeks. The presentation of this prestigious award took place during a ceremony attended by Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.
Mayor Chow recognized The Weeknd’s significant contributions to both music and society. “Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye represents the best of our city,” she stated. “From Scarborough to the global stage, he has reshaped modern music while using his platform to support health and humanitarian causes at home and around the world.” She expressed pride in honoring one of Toronto’s greatest artists and celebrating his impact on the music scene and culture.
In addition to the Key to the City, Mayor Chow proclaimed a special event titled "Weeknd Weekend," which is set to take place from Saturday, July 26, to Sunday, July 27, 2025, in Toronto.

The Weeknd is not only a four-time Grammy Award winner but also a proud ambassador for his hometown. He has credited Toronto with shaping his identity and providing a foundation for his thriving musical career. Notably, in 2021, he became the first Canadian artist to perform solo at the Super Bowl halftime show and continues to be one of the most-streamed artists globally.
Beyond his musical achievements, The Weeknd has made substantial philanthropic efforts within his community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he donated $500,000 to the Scarborough Health Network, showcasing his commitment to his local community. He has also been a strong supporter of the Ethiopian Studies program at the University of Toronto and co-founded HXOUSE, a Toronto-based nonprofit innovation hub designed to empower emerging creatives and entrepreneurs.
Expressing his gratitude, The Weeknd stated, “I’m deeply honoured to receive the Key to the City. It feels good to be home. Toronto is where I found my voice, and I’m committed to helping the next generation find theirs.” He emphasized his dedication to supporting local youth through initiatives such as the Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough and contributions to his former high school, Birchmount Park, providing opportunities for young people to achieve their full potential.
The Weeknd's upcoming performances at the Rogers Centre are scheduled for July 27 and 28, followed by additional shows on August 7 and 8, 2025. As he prepares for these highly anticipated concerts, the recognition he received symbolizes not only his achievements but also his ongoing commitment to his roots and community.
