In a significant law enforcement operation, four individuals are facing multiple gun and drug-related charges following a police intervention in Durham. The incident unfolded in the early hours of August 17, 2023, around 12:20 a.m., when Durham police responded to reports of a break-and-enter in the vicinity of Taunton Road West and Cochrane Street.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers engaged with the occupants of a vehicle and initiated a search after discovering open alcohol inside. This search yielded alarming results, as officers found a loaded firearm tucked into the waistband of one of the suspects, alongside various drugs, drug paraphernalia, and a quantity of cash.
Brock Osiris TATE, a 33-year-old resident of Pickering, has been charged with several serious offenses. These charges include possessing a restricted firearm knowingly without a license, possessing a loaded restricted or prohibited firearm, occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm, and possessing a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking. Following his arrest, TATE was held for a bail hearing.
Another suspect, Krista SAYER, who is 38 years old and currently without a fixed address, faces two charges. She is accused of possessing a Schedule 1 substance with the intent to traffic it, as well as having care and control of a motor vehicle while in possession of an open container of liquor.
Shaun Michael GELSINGER, a 37-year-old from Whitby, has been charged with similar offenses, specifically possessing a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking. He is alleged to have been involved in the illegal drug trade, adding to the concerns surrounding the incident.
Last but not least, Leah Julia HOPPING, a 28-year-old also from Whitby, is charged with possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking. HOPPING’s involvement highlights the escalating issue of drug-related crimes in the region.
While TATE was held for a bail hearing, both SAYER, GELSINGER, and HOPPING were subsequently released on an undertaking, allowing them to return to the community while facing these serious allegations. The actions of law enforcement in this case demonstrate their commitment to addressing and curtailing drug and gun-related crimes in Durham.
