Akash Sidhu has embarked on an extraordinary cycling journey across Canada, which began in June 2023 from Victoria, British Columbia. After nearly three months on the road, he recently made a noteworthy stop in Brampton, Ontario.
“It was my dream. I have been thinking about this for the last five or six years, and finally, I’m living it now,” Sidhu expressed, reflecting on his remarkable adventure.
With 70 days of travel under his belt, Sidhu has covered approximately 5,100 kilometers while averaging 97 kilometers each day. His longest single-day trek has been an impressive 151 kilometers. Throughout his journey, he has traversed five provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, facing varying weather conditions yet maintaining a consistent determination towards his goal.
Sidhu attributes his motivation to his father, who passed away five years ago. “My life really turned when my father passed away, and from that incident, I learned that we should pursue the things we dream of because we never know when our lives could end,” he reflected.
Looking ahead, Sidhu has about 3,000 kilometers left to complete his cross-country journey. His bicycle is equipped with essential gear, including a tent for camping, a sleeping bag, food supplies, cooking utensils, and clothing, allowing him to embrace the outdoor lifestyle that cycling demands.
Having arrived in Canada as an international student in 2015, Sidhu’s decade-long journey now involves exploring various provinces and connecting with diverse individuals. “The people I met were really shocked. Perhaps they have never seen any Indian or Punjabi doing this,” he noted, as he gestured towards his bicycle.
During his travels, Sidhu has found a warm reception from Canada’s South Asian community, particularly in the more remote areas he has cycled through. “Everyone is like, ‘Wow, it’s incredible; it’s amazing.’ They always welcome me and often offer food or water. They are genuinely interested in my journey,” he shared.
Documenting his experiences, Sidhu actively shares snippets of his adventure on social media platforms, including YouTube and Instagram. His vlogs capture not only the stunning scenery of Canada’s vast outdoors but also the essence of his daily adventures on the cycle.
In closing, Sidhu emphasizes a valuable life lesson, stating, “Life is all about making memories and staying healthy. So just keep doing whatever you like, and there should be no regrets in your life.” His story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of following one’s dreams.
