On Thursday afternoon, police identified a man who was found dead from a gunshot wound at the Scarborough Town Centre, a bustling shopping mall located at 300 Borough Drive. The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. when Toronto police received reports of a shooting at the site.

The victim was discovered in the family washroom situated in the food court area of the mall. Authorities pronounced the 19-year-old man, identified as Daniel Amalathas from Toronto, dead at the scene. Investigators noted that a firearm was recovered from the washroom, leading them to classify the death as suspicious.

The Toronto Police Service's Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. Acting Inspector Baheer Sarvanandan indicated that, at this stage, there are no known witnesses to the shooting. The police are utilizing video surveillance from the mall and forensic evidence to reconstruct the events leading up to the tragedy. Despite being in a crowded area, no reports had been made to police regarding gunfire prior to the discovery of the body.

Inspector Sarvanandan explained that the noise within the food court likely contributed to the lack of reports concerning the sound of shots fired. He mentioned that it appears only a single shot was fired, which could further explain why patrons in the vicinity did not notice anything amiss.

Authorities have assessed the area and deemed it safe for the public. The Homicide Unit continues to monitor the situation as they gather more information. At this juncture, there have been no additional details provided about potential suspects or specific circumstances surrounding how the shooting occurred.

Police and investigators are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation. As the situation unfolds, further developments are anticipated as law enforcement works diligently to bring clarity to this concerning event.
