Former President Barack Obama is actively participating in the upcoming battle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives by featuring in a 30-second advertisement. The ad advocates for California voters to support a proposal on the November ballot known as Proposition 50, which aims to potentially add up to five seats currently held by Democrats in the state’s congressional delegation.

Proposition 50 proposes significant redistricting changes to California's congressional districts with the objective of increasing Democratic representation in Congress. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to counteract Republican efforts, particularly those led by President Donald Trump in states like Texas, where efforts are underway to secure additional Republican seats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

In the advertisement, Obama directly addresses viewers, asserting that “Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield unchecked power for two more years.” His message encourages voters to act decisively to thwart Republican ambitions.

California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has positioned the election as a referendum on the Trump administration, leveraging the former president's unpopularity in the predominantly liberal state. The voting period for Proposition 50 is currently underway and will conclude on November 4.

However, opposition to the measure has emerged from Republicans and various other critics, who contend that Proposition 50 represents a Democratic power grab. They argue that it undermines the district lines established by an independent commission more than a decade ago, which was created through voter approval to ensure fair representation.

The competitive dynamics between California and Texas, the two most populous states in the U.S., have drawn national attention. Recently, Republican legislative leaders in North Carolina announced plans to vote on redrawing the state’s congressional district map as part of a strategic effort to secure more GOP representation in response to Democratic initiatives.

Currently, Republicans maintain a slim majority in the U.S. House with 219 seats against 213 for Democrats, along with three vacant positions. Should Proposition 50 pass, there is a real possibility that the new political map could eliminate up to five Republican-held seats while simultaneously strengthening Democratic incumbents in other challenging districts. This could significantly enhance the Democratic representation in California, increasing their total from 43 to possibly 48 out of the state’s 52 congressional seats.

As the implications of Proposition 50 unfold, the outcome of this election could have a crucial impact on the balance of power in the U.S. House. With both parties mobilizing significant resources and high-profile endorsements, the stakes are high as voters prepare to make their voices heard in the upcoming electoral decision.
