The Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) line is set to officially open to the public on December 7, 2025. This date was announced in documentation shared prior to the Metrolinx board meeting, which is scheduled for November 27, 2025. The announcement comes as Metrolinx confirms that significant milestones regarding the line's readiness have been achieved, paving the way for the impending launch.
Sean Fuller, the CEO of Metrolinx Rapid Transit, stated in a quarterly report prepared for the upcoming meeting that the final 30-day revenue service demonstration had been successfully completed. This critical phase enabled Metrolinx to evaluate and validate the performance and reliability of the Finch West LRT. Following this, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) took full operational control of the line on November 12, 2025, moving the project closer to its anticipated opening.
In the Capital Projects Progress report, it was indicated that substantial completion of the line was achieved on the same day, November 12. Metrolinx is now collaborating with the TTC to finalize preparations for the commencement of revenue service on December 7. Sources had previously confirmed the opening date nearly a month ago to 680 News Radio, after the LRT successfully completed its 30-day revenue service demonstration, proving that it operates as intended.
The Finch West LRT consists of 18 stops and primarily runs along Finch Avenue West. It stretches from the Finch West subway station located at Keele Street to the Humber College station at Highway 27. The construction of this project began in 2019 and was initially scheduled for completion by the end of 2023.
In a contrasting development, there remains no definitive opening date for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which has been under construction and commissioning for 14 years. Currently, the Eglinton LRT is also undergoing its revenue service demonstration phase. Upon completion of this phase, the system will be formally transferred to the TTC for final preparations before passenger service can commence.
This progress regarding the Finch West LRT marks a significant achievement for the infrastructure development within Toronto, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance public transit offerings in the region. As preparations move forward, the successful launch of the Finch West LRT is eagerly anticipated by both residents and transit users alike.
