SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — An 83-year-old man from South Charleston, Ohio, William J. Brock, has been convicted of murder following the fatal shooting of an Uber driver. The incident stemmed from a fraudulent scheme that misled both Brock and the driver, 61-year-old Lo-Letha Toland-Hall from Dublin, Ohio. Prosecutors revealed that this tragic turn of events unfolded on March 25, 2024, when Brock mistook Toland-Hall as a participant in what he believed was a robbery attempt.
Brock was convinced that Toland-Hall, who was allegedly deceived by the same scam, drove to his residence to pick up a package containing $12,000 meant for a non-existent bond for a relative. This misguided assumption led to a deadly encounter, during which Brock shot Toland-Hall six times when she arrived at his home. Authorities confirmed that the driver was unaware of the scam situation that had led to Brock's anxiety and subsequent actions.
After a trial that examined the circumstances surrounding the shooting, Brock was convicted on charges of murder, felonious assault, and kidnapping. His legal counsel argued that Brock acted in self-defense, claiming he felt threatened due to prior threats made against him and his family by the scammer.
