The police response occurred around 11 a.m. at a residence located on Cedar Street, which was reported for a mental health incident. Upon arrival, officers encountered a 27-year-old man who was reportedly armed with a knife. The SIU released a statement confirming that there was an interaction between the police and the suspect, during which one officer discharged their firearm multiple times. Both the officer and the armed individual were struck in the ensuing altercation.
Importantly, the SIU noted that it does not appear the suspect was in possession of a firearm at the time of the incident. As a result of the shooting, the injured officer was transported to a trauma center in Toronto, where their condition was reported as critical but stable.
