Police in the Niagara Region have apprehended a second suspect in connection with a stabbing incident that took place in St. Catharines last year. This development follows an ongoing investigation into the violent attack that left the victim with serious injuries.

The incident occurred on the morning of October 5, 2025, when officers were dispatched to the vicinity of Queenston Street and Niagara Street. Upon arrival, they discovered a man in his 30s who had been sleeping outdoors when he was allegedly assaulted. According to investigators, the victim was struck on the head and stabbed multiple times by an unknown assailant who subsequently fled the scene, taking the victim’s phone with him.

Following the attack, the injured man was located by police and immediately transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have described the assault as an "isolated, yet random, act of violence," emphasizing the brutality of the crime against a vulnerable individual.

On Friday, authorities provided an update regarding the investigation, announcing the arrest of 36-year-old Kyle Cormier, who is currently without a permanent address. According to detectives, Cormier not only stole from the victim after the stabbing but also failed to offer any assistance or call for help. Police reported that he took the victim’s cellphone from his backpack while the man was suffering from severe injuries.

Cormier was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and has since been released on an undertaking pending further legal proceedings. This arrest marks a significant development in the case, as it highlights the opportunistic behavior exhibited by Cormier amid the ongoing crisis faced by the victim.

Prior to Cormier's arrest, police had already taken into custody another suspect, 48-year-old Mark Formanek, also of no fixed address. Formanek was arrested in October 2025 and has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder. This indicates the severity of the assault and the police's dedication to bringing those responsible to justice.

In terms of evidence, investigators have recovered a knife believed to have been used during the attack, reinforcing the serious nature of the charges faced by both suspects. Additionally, authorities have indicated that there is video evidence linked to the incident, which may provide further clarity and context to the events that transpired.

The police are continuing their investigation to ensure that all involved parties are held accountable for their actions in this shocking case. The community has been alerted to the nature of the crime, which serves as a reminder of the risks faced by individuals in vulnerable situations.
