TOKYO (AP) – Cherry blossom enthusiasts across Japan celebrated the official start of the season as the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced the first blooms of the country's beloved sakura in three cities on Monday. Officials from the JMA conducted thorough examinations of the benchmark Somei Yoshino cherry trees in three distinct locations: Kochi in the southwest region, and Gifu and Yamanashi in central Japan. Kochi led the way with its cherry trees blossoming first, achieving this milestone for the third consecutive year. Shinobu Imoto, a representative from the Kochi Meteorological Agency, shared insights about the reasons behind the early blooming. During an interview with TBS television, he attributed the unusual timing to two main factors: low rainfall during the winter months and increased hours of sunshine.
