(AP) — Former NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal has stepped in to assist the grieving family of Jada West, a 12-year-old girl from Georgia who tragically passed away after collapsing following a fight. O'Neal has offered to cover the expenses for Jada's funeral, expressing his desire to alleviate the family's financial burden during this heart-wrenching time.
Jada West, a sixth grader, died in a hospital on March 8, just days after the altercation that reportedly took place near a neighborhood bus stop on March 5. O'Neal stated, "No parent should ever have to bury their child," emphasizing that it is crucial to help in any way possible during such a devastating period.
The announcement of O'Neal's generous offer was made in a joint news release by the sheriffs of Douglas County and Henry County, the latter being where O'Neal owns a residence and serves as the community relations chief. Both counties are situated in the suburbs of Atlanta, highlighting O'Neal's close ties to the region and its community.
The circumstances surrounding Jada's death are currently under investigation by police in Villa Rica, located approximately 30 miles west of Atlanta. The police reported that Jada engaged in a fistfight with another girl shortly after being dropped off by the school bus. Following this confrontation, Jada was found lying unresponsive in the street, prompting emergency responders to be dispatched.
Sgt. Spencer Crawford, a police spokesman, noted that investigators are examining cellphone footage shared via social media, which depicts Jada and another girl throwing punches in a scuffle. The video captures the moments leading to the fight's conclusion with an adult stepping in, after which Jada picks up her backpack and is seen walking away. Unfortunately, she never made it home, as she was later discovered in cardiac arrest.
The autopsy results, which would provide clarity on the precise cause of Jada's death, have not yet been made public. Jada's aunt, Lindsey McClendon Pettiford, has announced the funeral date, which is set for Saturday. This tragic incident has sparked widespread attention and concern among the local community and beyond as they grapple with the loss of a young life.
