On Saturday afternoon, around 4:30 p.m., a significant incident occurred at the Preserve at Chocorua, a wedding venue located in Tamworth, New Hampshire. During a wedding attended by approximately 140 guests, a portion of the floor collapsed, resulting in injuries to six individuals who were subsequently taken to local hospitals. Fortunately, all injuries were reported to be non-life threatening, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office.
Dispatch audio from first responders revealed the gravity of the situation, highlighting that first responders were dispatched promptly to the scene. The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office confirmed that there were no fatalities as a result of the collapse, alleviating some concerns following the shocking incident.
Efforts to contact the Preserve at Chocorua for further information were unsuccessful as phone calls went unanswered. Tamworth, a small community with a population of roughly 2,800 residents, is situated about 115 miles north of Concord, New Hampshire, making the venue somewhat remote and affecting the logistics of emergency response.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office dispatched multiple agencies to manage the situation but declined to provide additional details as the investigation unfolded. Staff from MaineHealth Memorial Hospital also did not respond to inquiries regarding the condition of those injured in the collapse.
Upon arrival, first responders observed that half of the floor where the wedding ceremony was scheduled to take place had collapsed into the basement. A first responder who was among the first on the scene reported that there were approximately 145 people present during the incident. This underscores the potential for a much higher number of casualties, had the situation been more severe. The responder indicated that emergency teams were carefully evacuating individuals from the building, prioritizing their safety and well-being.
As the situation developed, the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed that they would take charge of the investigation into the structural collapse. They will assess the cause of the failure to determine if there were any underlying issues that led to the incident at the wedding venue. This investigation is crucial not only for accountability but also to ensure such incidents are mitigated in the future.
The local community in Tamworth is undoubtedly shaken by the incident, particularly given the celebratory nature of the occasion that was abruptly disrupted. As more information comes to light regarding the causes of the collapse and the conditions of those injured, it remains essential for venue operators and local authorities to review safety measures in place to prevent similar occurrences at events.
Following the emergency response, the focus will likely shift to both the victims and the structural integrity of the venue itself. Continuous monitoring and evaluations may lead to changes or enhancements in regulatory practices affecting similar establishments throughout the area.
