A teenager has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of an 83-year-old woman, Eleanor Doney, outside her home in Pickering in 2025. The court proceedings took place on a Thursday in Oshawa, where an agreed statement of facts was presented that outlines the circumstances of Doney’s death.

The 14-year-old assailant, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was seen on surveillance footage walking on Lynn Heights Drive while Doney was raking leaves in her front yard on May 29. The documented details reveal that the teen, dressed in a black jacket, face mask, and gloves, approached Doney and engaged her in conversation for about two minutes just before 3 p.m. He subsequently retrieved a knife from a briefcase and stabbed her on the left side of her neck.

Following the initial strike, Doney attempted to make her way back to her house but was pursued by the teen, who stabbed her two additional times. The footage captured Doney's cries as she fell to the sidewalk, where she was subjected to further repeated stabbings in the face. The teenager then ran away from the scene, leaving Doney twitching on the ground. A passerby discovered her shortly after and alerted the Durham Regional Police, but despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at around 4 p.m. at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.

Police launched a neighborhood canvass, leading to the teen’s identification through educators who noted he had been suspended the day before for bringing a knife to school. During the search, officers issued an emergency alert to warn the community of the ongoing investigation. Surveillance videos tracked the teenager's movements post-murder, including a visit to a nearby wooded area where a knife linked to the killing was found.

The police apprehended the teen without incident later that evening. A search of his home revealed clothing believed to have been worn during the crime, as well as a missing knife from a household set that bore his fingerprints. Investigators seized electronic devices, which indicated an increasing interest in dark themes such as sociopathy, psychopathy, and serial killers.

Chat records from Discord showed the teen expressed fascination with psychopathy and serial killers, alongside discussions about an anime character who leads a double life as a businessman and secret killer. Throughout May, police noted alarming searches on his electronic devices, including topics about stabbing techniques, videos on serial killers, and questions about identifying psychopaths.

On the day prior to the assault, he posted on social media indicating he might "kill something" during a planned absence from school, alongside threats directed at a peer that led to his suspension. During assessments, a defense psychologist revealed the teen admitted to experiencing violent ideations leading up to the murder, and he consciously decided to carry out his plan upon encountering Doney.

Family, Friends Remember Eleanor Doney

During the court hearing, the impact of Doney’s murder was expressed through 17 victim impact statements from family and friends. Bruce Doney, her husband, spoke of the profound loss and emotional toll her death has taken on him. He described their life together, emphasizing their shared love for gardening and daily companionship. Bruce expressed fears about the teen potentially being released and reiterated his hope for appropriate treatment to prevent future violence.

Jeff Doney, their son, reflected on the void his mother’s absence has created in their lives. He cherished the small moments of connection and encouragement he received from her, which now leave a significant emotional gap. Friends also expressed their grief, with one friend recounting how the imagery of Eleanor’s tragic end continues to haunt her.

The devastating emotional impact of Doney's murder reverberates through her family and community, highlighting the deep connections and the void left by her untimely death, as they grapple with feelings of loss, confusion, and anger in the wake of this tragic event.
