Toronto Pearson International Airport is set to conduct a comprehensive "full-scale emergency exercise" this weekend. The drill is scheduled to commence at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, and will extend into the early morning hours of the following Sunday.

This annual exercise is not just a routine practice; it is mandated by Transport Canada and serves as a crucial component of the airport's emergency preparedness strategies. Since its inception in 1991, the exercise has become a staple in the airport's safety protocols, designed specifically to evaluate and improve emergency response capabilities across a wide array of stakeholders.

Involved in this year’s exercise will be airport staff, first responders, airline representatives, and various agency partners, alongside a contingent of approximately 200 volunteers. Collectively, these participants work to ensure that all emergency scenarios are tested thoroughly, allowing for a unified response in the event of a real emergency situation.

Earlier this year, in February, the airport’s emergency teams were called to action following a serious incident involving a Delta Air Lines flight. The flight from Minneapolis experienced a crash landing at Toronto Pearson, during which it flipped onto its back amid challenging winter weather conditions. At the time of the accident, there were 76 passengers and four crew members onboard, highlighting the vital importance of the emergency exercise in training and preparedness when real situations arise.
