LITTLE RIVER, S.C. (AP) — A shooting incident on Sunday night in Little River, South Carolina, left at least 11 individuals hospitalized, according to authorities. The incident took place around 9:30 p.m. in a primarily residential area situated near the Intracoastal Waterway, characterized by a few boating businesses.
Horry County Police did not provide details concerning the condition of those injured in the incident. Reports indicated that additional victims were arriving at nearby hospitals via private vehicles, prompting further concern from law enforcement. In a social media update, police referred to the shooting as an isolated event and assured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Approximately 90 minutes following the shooting, the police reiterated their stance that the incident posed no risk to residents. However, they did not disclose any information regarding potential suspects or the motive behind the shooting, which remains under investigation.
As emergency crews responded to the scene, video footage captured numerous police vehicles and ambulances navigating the area, highlighting the urgent nature of the situation. Notably, a North Myrtle Beach police officer who was responding to the emergency unintentionally shot himself in the leg while at a marina nearly three miles away from the initial shooting site. The officer has since been transported to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Little River is located approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of the well-known tourist destination of Myrtle Beach. The community, typically recognized for its serene residential environment, is now grappling with the aftermath of this violent episode.
