A 21-year-old man from Toronto, identified as Shevontae Stewart-Wilson, is currently facing nearly a dozen charges related to firearms. The police are also looking for a second individual connected to the ongoing investigation into this incident.
The events unfolded on the evening of July 15, around 9:30 p.m., in the Driftwood Avenue and Finch Avenue West area. According to investigators, Stewart-Wilson and another man were spotted by police while walking in the vicinity. Upon seeing the police vehicle, the two men made an attempt to flee, triggering a pursuit by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
During the chase, police reports indicate that one of the suspects was observed discarding a firearm. Officers quickly apprehended Stewart-Wilson, but not without incident; two police officers sustained non-life threatening injuries during the pursuit and subsequent arrest.
As part of the investigation, authorities recovered a loaded firearm and an extended magazine from the scene. Additionally, a satchel allegedly carried by Stewart-Wilson was found to contain another loaded extended magazine. This evidence significantly contributes to the charges laid against him.
Stewart-Wilson is facing a total of 10 firearms-related charges. These include unauthorized possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition in violation of a prohibition order. The nature of these charges indicates the severity of the situation and the potential legal consequences the accused may face.
At this stage, police have not provided a description of the second individual they are seeking in connection with this case. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement likely considering various avenues to gather more information related to the second suspect.
This incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding gun violence and public safety in urban areas like Toronto. The police's quick response and pursuit reflect their commitment to addressing such threats to the community, as well as their efforts to disarm those illegally possessing firearms.
As law enforcement continues to work on this case, the community remains vigilant, aware of the potential dangers posed by illegal firearms and the need for cooperation between the public and police to enhance safety in the area.
