The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) stands as a cherished tradition, celebrating the final days of summer with an array of culinary delights and exciting attractions. For food enthusiasts, the CNE offers a chance to experience adventurous and unique fare that tests the boundaries of taste and occasionally the limits of digestion.
Culinary creativity is a hallmark of the event, with vendors consistently pushing the envelope by introducing imaginative dishes designed to surprise and provoke curiosity among attendees. While some opt for more traditional items, others embrace the trend of extravagant food offerings that draw large crowds eager to partake in the latest gastronomic fads.
Not every culinary invention made at the CNE is destined for remembrance. However, a select few have earned a place in the CNE Food Hall of Fame, which honors those creations that have not only captivated the taste buds of visitors but have also become emblematic of the fair itself.
This year, the inductees of the CNE Food Hall of Fame for 2026 boast a variety of offerings that span the culinary spectrum. One standout is the 24K Gold Burger, introduced by Bacon Nation in 2018. This extravagant burger, adorned with edible gold, became a phenomenon, drawing significant attention when food culture began to captivate social media. Priced at $100 for the oversized version, it gained popularity as patrons queued to share their experiences on Instagram. A smaller gold slider option was also offered for $24.
Another inductee is The Perogy Chef Perogies, a mainstay within the Food Building that has remained unchanged for the past 40 years. Founded by Boris Hirniak, who passed away in 2009, the stall is now run by Neil Sarel, who has maintained the legacy by preserving the original recipes and honoring its founder with memorabilia. Annually, The Perogy Chef serves over three tonnes of perogies, underscoring its status as a beloved classic among fair-goers.
In 2017, the Deep Fried Chicken Feet redefined the scope of deep-fried offerings at the CNE. The introduction of this dish, while commonplace in various cultures, was surprising for many visitors. Its presence marked a pivotal moment, encouraging other vendors to think outside conventional fair food norms.
Bouchard’s Poutine has also made its mark at the CNE. Operating since 2008, this poutine shop incorporates Canadian-sourced ingredients to create generous servings of the beloved national dish. Bouchard’s Poutinerie has become well known for its unique variations such as Lumberjack Poutine, which features bacon and eggs, and Cheeseburger Poutine, complete with pickles, ketchup, and mustard.
Additionally, Roasted Corn has earned a well-deserved spot in the Hall of Fame. This summer staple can be found at more than eight outdoor vendors, offering various toppings such as butter, Cajun seasoning, and even Hot Cheetos or colorful queso. It exemplifies the joy of simple yet satisfying summer fare.
Looking back at previous years, the CNE Food Hall of Fame has seen a variety of iconic dishes inducted. The 2024 class included the likes of Tiny Tom Donuts, Deep Fried Butter, Ice Cream Waffle, Pickle Pizza, and Primo Spaghetti. Last year’s honors in 2025 were awarded to favorites including Rainbow Grilled Cheese, Jumbo Turkey Leg, Corn Dog, Colossal Onion, and Bug D.
As the CNE continues to celebrate its culinary heritage, each new inductee reinforces the event’s dedication to providing a blend of nostalgia and innovation, making it a must-visit destination for food lovers and fair-goers alike.
