The long ordeal for Montreal resident Abir Batikhi ended on September 2 when her missing cat, Caramel, was safely returned home after being lost for 16 days at Toronto Pearson Airport. Caramel, a seven-year-old feline, went missing after Batikhi arrived in Toronto from Jordan with her four cats. To Batikhi's shock, one of the cat carriers was found empty, leaving her to worry about Caramel’s fate in such a vast and busy airport.
The exact circumstances that led to Caramel's escape remain unclear. However, the dedicated efforts of the Toronto Pearson staff led to her recovery. The airport employees and the Falcon Environmental agency worked collaboratively, setting humane traps and monitoring the area consistently. Their perseverance paid off when Caramel was found and safely captured in one of the traps.
Batikhi expressed immense gratitude upon receiving the news of her cat’s recovery. “She is a survivor!” she said, praising both the airport staff and the collective rescue efforts. The news brought overwhelming relief, especially when the airline's station manager sent her a picture of Caramel, confirming she was safe.
On September 4, airport staff transported Caramel back to Montreal, where Batikhi was reunited with her cherished pet. However, the reunion was bittersweet as Batikhi noticed signs of distress in Caramel. “Honestly, it was very, very painful because she looked like she was in pain,” Batikhi reflected. The ordeal took a toll on Caramel, who had lost weight and showed signs of nervousness. Yet, upon seeing Batikhi, Caramel began to “talk,” which brought joy to Batikhi despite the circumstances.
As Caramel settled back into her home, Batikhi noted that the cat’s recovery process was underway. Although she was scared initially, by the next morning, Caramel began to return to her usual routine. When Batikhi opened cans to feed her other cats, Caramel joined them to eat and seemed to bond with her siblings once again. This positive interaction indicated that she was beginning to overcome her traumatic experience.
Throughout the distressing events, Batikhi received an outpouring of support from the community, with many people reaching out to offer help and encouragement. “I don’t believe how people are very nice,” Batikhi stated, expressing her heartfelt gratitude for those who took the time to search for Caramel, even though they were strangers to her.
