MILAN (AP) – Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe, put on a dramatic display on Monday, June 2, 2025, sending a significant cloud of smoke and ash several kilometers into the atmosphere. Despite the vigorous volcanic activity, officials assured the public that there was no immediate danger to the resident population.

As a precautionary measure, the alert level was elevated at Catania airport, although no flight interruptions were reported in the aftermath of the eruption. By the afternoon, authorities confirmed that the emission of ash had ceased. The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) attributed the eruption to the collapse of part of the southeast crater, which in turn triggered hot lava flows. This marked the 14th eruptive phase observed in recent months.

Stefano Branca, an official from INGV based in Catania, emphasized that the hazardous area was restricted solely to the summit of Mount Etna, which was temporarily closed to tourists for safety reasons. Renato Schifani, the president of Sicily, reassured the public that the lava flows generated during the eruption had remained within their natural containment zones, thus presenting no threat to the surrounding communities.

The volcanic event garnered substantial attention on social media, with videos and photographs capturing the impressive display of nature's power going viral. Reports from Italian media indicated that tremors from the eruption were felt across various towns and villages located on the flanks of Mount Etna. Video footage showcased tourists fleeing along paths on the volcano’s slope as smoke billowed ominously in the background.

Mount Etna stands at approximately 3,300 meters (almost 11,000 feet) high and covers a surface area of about 1,200 square kilometers (approximately 460 square miles). This popularity of excursions and hikes on the volcano highlights the enduring fascination and allure surrounding one of nature's most formidable forces.

In conclusion, while the eruption showcased the volcano's active nature, proper measures were taken by officials to ensure public safety, minimizing any potential risks to the local community and visitors desiring to experience the majesty of Mount Etna.
