MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hurricane Barbara has transitioned from a tropical storm to a hurricane as it continues to move northwest away from land. Monday afternoon marked its progression during the first of the eastern Pacific hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami reported that swells produced by the storm system would affect parts of southwestern Mexico in the coming days, leading to potentially life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

As of Monday, Hurricane Barbara was situated approximately 175 miles (280 kilometers) west-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. The storm exhibited maximum sustained winds reaching 75 mph (120 kph) and was advancing northwest at a speed of 10 mph (17 kph). According to forecasts, Barbara is expected to begin weakening by nightfall as it approaches the Baja Peninsula.

While no coastal warnings or watches were in effect as of Monday morning, meteorologists cautioned that heavy rains would likely impact coastal regions in Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco states. This rainfall carries the risk of localized flooding, further exacerbating the effects of the storm.

The NHC also emphasized that swells generated by Hurricane Barbara are anticipated to create hazardous surf and rip currents along the southwestern coast of Mexico, accompanied by gusty winds. Authorities are urging vigilance among beachgoers due to the dangerous conditions expected in the affected areas.

In addition to Hurricane Barbara, Tropical Storm Cosme has also gained strength. As of Monday afternoon, Cosme was positioned roughly 605 miles (975 kilometers) south-southwest of the tip of Baja California, with sustained winds of 70 mph (100 kph) and a northwest movement of 9 mph (15 kph). Forecasts predict that Cosme may reach near-hurricane strength throughout Monday before veering northeast and gaining momentum on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Both storms highlight the dynamic nature of weather patterns in the eastern Pacific as the hurricane season progresses. Meteorologists continue to monitor these systems closely to provide timely information and updates for residents and mariners in potentially affected areas.

As Hurricane Barbara and Tropical Storm Cosme evolve, authorities and residents are advised to remain informed and prepared for any changes in conditions. The NHC's updates will play a crucial role in ensuring safety along the coastlines as these storms develop.
