Police in York Region have apprehended two individuals in connection with a series of alarming home invasions that primarily targeted sex workers in Markham. The rising concern in the community surrounding these incidents has prompted law enforcement to act swiftly, resulting in the arrests of the suspects.
The initial assault took place around 11:30 p.m. on May 30, at a condominium located near the intersection of Verdale Crossing and Birchmount Road. During this incident, a sex worker was exiting their residence when a man forcefully entered the home. Upon entering, he assaulted the victim while demanding cash. The assailant fled the scene in a blue sedan that was reportedly driven by a second individual.
Further investigations led authorities to link the same suspects to two additional home invasions that occurred on June 27. These incidents took place at condominiums situated in the vicinity of Highway 7 East and Roddick Road. In both cases, the victims were once again individuals involved in the sex trade, indicating a disturbing trend in the targeting of this community.
In addition to the home invasions, police have identified one of the suspects, Oniel Joshua Forrester, in relation to a robbery that happened in Barrie on May 6. This connection raises questions about the extent of the suspects' criminal activities and their potential involvement in other crimes across the region.
The diligent efforts of investigators have led to the identification of the suspects. Subsequently, a search warrant was executed at a residence in Toronto where both suspects were arrested. During this operation, law enforcement officials recovered stolen property, reinforcing their case against Forrester and his accomplice, Maryanne Cunanan.
Forrester, a 29-year-old resident of Barrie, and Cunanan, a 30-year-old from Toronto, now face a total of 12 charges. Among these charges are robbery and armed robbery, both serious offenses that reflect the violent nature of the crimes they are accused of committing.
Authorities are making it clear that they believe Forrester and Cunanan could be linked to additional incidents, urging any other victims of similar crimes to come forward.
