Officials from the City of Toronto have announced that outdoor programming, which was previously suspended due to poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke from northern Ontario, is set to resume on Saturday. This decision follows consultations with the municipality's medical officer and Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The City of Toronto issued a statement on Saturday morning, highlighting a shift in their approach to handling air quality alerts. The aim is to better balance public health considerations while ensuring residents have access to the outdoor facilities, programs, and services they rely on. “As a result, and based on improving air quality throughout the day, the City expects to resume outdoor programs and services at 2 p.m. today,” the statement affirmed.
Recent suspensions included all outdoor pools, wading pools, and lifeguard supervision at ten supervised beaches across Toronto. Additionally, various programmed activities, such as CampTO field trips and other registered services, were also impacted. Residents eager to take advantage of the outdoor pools, wading pools, and beaches are encouraged to check the municipality’s website for up-to-date information regarding reopening times.
Furthermore, the anticipated FIFA Fan Festival events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday are also expected to proceed as planned. City officials stated that they will continue to monitor the weather conditions closely and are prepared to take further action if necessary. "If conditions worsen or public health risks increase, the City may once again temporarily close outdoor services, including outdoor pools and wading pools, suspend lifeguard supervision at the City’s ten supervised beaches, and cancel, modify, or adjust other outdoor programming as necessary,” the statement warned.
The decision to resume outdoor activities is a positive development for many residents who have been awaiting the reopening of these essential outdoor amenities. The city is taking necessary precautions to safeguard public health while facilitating residents’ access to valuable recreational services.
