Crews in Nova Scotia have been actively engaged in combating a rapidly spreading wildfire located northeast of Halifax. The fire, which ignited earlier in the week and has led to evacuations, has grown to approximately 14 square kilometers in size, according to the province's Natural Resources Department.
A provincial spokesperson noted that the size of the affected area was revised downward by three square kilometers from a previous report due to more precise mapping. This update included the subtraction of bodies of water from the total area calculation.
The wildfire prompted Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency to issue an evacuation order on Thursday night, affecting around 100 properties, including cottages, cabins, and homes situated along Mooseland Road. In response to the emergency, multiple firefighting resources have been deployed, including two fixed-wing water bombers from Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as two helicopters and four fixed-wing water bombers from Nova Scotia itself.
Local and provincial firefighting crews have been battling the blaze since Wednesday, working diligently to contain its spread. By Saturday afternoon, Mooseland Road remained closed starting from the intersection with Highway 7, as stated by the Natural Resources Department. Authorities have advised the public to avoid the affected area and to maintain a safe distance from emergency personnel engaged in firefighting efforts.
In an update regarding weather conditions, Environment Canada has predicted a 60 percent chance of rain for the Halifax area on Sunday, which could provide some relief to the firefighting efforts.
Meanwhile, the national wildland fire summary reported a staggering number of over 950 wildfires burning across Canada as of Saturday. Significant wildfire activity in regions such as Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories has led to air quality warnings and, in some instances, additional evacuations.
