A police-involved shooting occurred on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City when officers fatally shot a knife-wielding man who had been walking on the cables of the structure. Authorities reported that the incident unfolded when the man, who ignored multiple orders to drop his weapon, advanced towards an officer who was trying to assist him down from the cables. The shooting resulted in the temporary closure of one of the city's most iconic landmarks and disrupted traffic in the surrounding area for part of the morning.
This incident came just four days after another violent attack in Times Square, where a woman fatally stabbed one person and injured another before being shot by police. This alarming series of events has raised concerns about public safety in one of the busiest areas of New York City.
The man on the Brooklyn Bridge expressed suicidal intentions, reportedly telling the police rescue team that he wanted to be killed and claimed he was in possession of a bomb. Gerard Dowling, commanding officer of the city’s Emergency Services Unit, stated in a press conference that officers had engaged with the man for about an hour, attempting to communicate with him and persuade him to drop the knife and come to safety.
According to Dowling, officers employed a safety harness while working on the bridge and had established a line below the man on the same cable. As the situation escalated, the man began to climb down more rapidly. Dowling mentioned that while officers attempted to distance themselves from the man, they were unable to retreat fast enough as he approached them.
When the man came within three feet (0.9 meters) of an officer while raising the knife, one of the officers on the bridge's roadbed discharged his weapon, striking the man. The officers immediately rendered aid before he was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Body cameras worn by the police recorded the interaction, preserving evidence of the tense confrontation.
In addition to the knife, police also recovered a flashlight from the scene, but it remains unclear if a bomb was found, as that part of the investigation is still ongoing. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who made statements regarding the situation, emphasized that the police's initial response was aimed at de-escalating tensions and persuading the man not to jump from the bridge.
During the confrontation, Mamdani noted that the man was threatening officers with the knife and ultimately moved towards them, which led to the officer discharging his weapon. He reiterated the gravity of the situation that unfolded at this historic site, known for its stunning architectural features and heavy foot traffic.
The Brooklyn Bridge, which opened in 1883, connects Manhattan and Brooklyn and stands at a towering height of 276.5 feet (84 meters) above the water. The earlier stabbing incident in Times Square involved a 49-year-old woman who stabbed two individuals, including a 68-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman. The older victim was attacked shortly after exiting the subway station. Despite police efforts to negotiate with the assailant, who refused to drop her knives and made violent threats, officers were ultimately forced to use a Taser, which failed to incapacitate her. This resulted in two officers shooting the woman, further highlighting the challenges police face in rapidly evolving and dangerous scenarios.
