In addition, Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in three fatalities.
The U.S. military stated that the three Iranian tankers were part of a “shadow network” that supports Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard and its armed factions throughout the region. Iranian state television reported that four U.S. missiles struck one of the tankers approximately six miles from Kharg Island, a key terminal for Iran's oil exports, but noted that there were no casualties from the attack.
Kharg Island has been a focal point in the ongoing conflict, having previously experienced U.S. strikes on military sites in March. This recent missile attack comes less than a week after the U.S. renewed strikes on Iranian targets following a month-long hiatus. The U.S. military reported that an American aircraft carrier and a destroyer managed to evade “multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks” while patrolling the area, with no personnel losses among American forces.
Shifting focus to the West Bank, U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee condemned the violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers, calling their actions “terroristic.” He addressed Palestinian American residents in the village of Turmus Ayya, emphasizing that the illegal occupation and vandalism carried out by settlers extend beyond typical criminal acts and are, in fact, acts of terror. Huckabee’s remarks come amid rising tensions following several weeks of unrest in the town of Qusra, where settlers surrounded Palestinian homes, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to denounce the actions as the work of a “handful of rioters.” The current Israeli government is characterized as the most ultranationalist and religious in Israel's history, overseeing a surge in settlement construction in the West Bank, which is largely deemed illegal by the international community.
In Yemen, Iranian-backed Houthi rebels accused the government of killing three individuals in attacks in Hodeida and Taiz provinces. The Houthis reported that a father and daughter were killed in a home attack in southern Jarahi district, while shelling in Taiz resulted in one fatality and another injury. Concurrently, Yemen's military announced it had conducted over 15 airstrikes targeting Houthi positions, amidst intensified fighting along Yemen's western coast, which is a crucial supply route.
On the northern front, Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in three deaths, as reported by Lebanon’s Health Ministry. The Israeli military confirmed that these airstrikes targeted Hezbollah positions late on Friday in response to a drone launched towards Israeli forces, which was intercepted without causing any injuries to soldiers. In June, a U.S.-mediated framework deal was established to facilitate Israeli withdrawal from occupied areas in southern Lebanon in return for disarmament of Hezbollah, although little progress has been seen since then. The conflict has escalated since late February when Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel following U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran.
Amidst these escalating tensions, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized the importance of regional de-escalation during discussions with the foreign ministers of Bahrain and Oman. Abdelatty urged for a return to negotiations between the U.S. and Iran and called for prioritizing the safety of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, where tensions remain high and shipping levels are currently reduced.
