The Toledo Police Department confirmed that the victims, who ranged in age from 14 to 61, are all in stable condition. Despite the serious nature of the incident, there have been no arrests made, and no suspects have been identified as of now. According to Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan, it appears that at least two individuals were firing weapons, possibly at one another.
Videos shared on social media depicted the frantic scene, showcasing individuals fleeing at the sound of gunfire, while medics treated the wounded among a crowd gathered around event tents and food vendors. As the investigation continued into Sunday, Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates expressed her commitment to ensuring “swift and strong” justice for those who experienced harm or trauma due to this violent act. “This is my home. These are my friends and neighbors. It is not OK,” she stated emphatically.
Toledo police have been active in the search for the shooters, encouraging attendees of the festival to share any photos or videos that might aid in identifying those responsible. The Old West End Festival, an anticipated two-day event showcasing live music, local food vendors, and shopping opportunities, was abruptly halted for the remainder of the weekend following the shooting. Festival organizers expressed their heartbreak over the injuries sustained during the event.
Fire Chief Allison Armstrong noted the challenges emergency responders faced in transporting the injured to hospitals due to traffic congestion and closed roads, but confirmed that all victims were transported within an hour. The emotional toll of the incident was evident, with Lt. Dan Gerken of the Toledo police acknowledging the severity of the shooting, stating, “Twelve people being shot, that’s the most I’ve been to a scene. I’ve been to a lot of scenes, but this is way over the top.”
Eyewitness Kevin Berry recounted his experience as he witnessed the immediate aftermath of the gunfire while enjoying live music. Berry, who has medical training, assisted those in need and noticed at least five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. This incident in Toledo was one of at least two occurrences of mass gun violence in the U.S. over the weekend. Another shooting took place in Kansas City, Missouri, where nine adults were also injured. Fortunately, none of the victims from that shooting sustained life-threatening injuries, and, similarly, police have yet to apprehend any suspects related to that incident.
