OTTAWA — Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne has stated that Russia's participation in a G20 meeting organized by the United States has caused significant discomfort among several countries present. This meeting took place on Tuesday in Asheville, North Carolina, where U.S. officials extended an invitation to Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov.
Champagne commented during a video conference that the presence of Russia at the meeting generated unease, not only from Canada but also from various other representatives around the table. He emphasized Canada's unwavering commitment to supporting the Ukrainian people, making it clear that their discomfort regarding Russia's attendance was communicated to their colleagues at the meeting.
Despite its 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia remains a G20 member. In contrast, the G7 group expelled Russia following the initial invasion and annexation of Crimea in 2014. Tensions regarding Russia's participation in international forums have been rising, prompting discussions about the legitimacy of such involvement under the current geopolitical circumstances.
Notably, the United States did not extend an invitation to South Africa for this meeting. Former U.S. President Donald Trump had alleged that South Africa was engaged in actions amounting to genocide against white people, a claim that has been widely disputed and rejected by major human rights organizations.
Trump defended the invitation to Russia by stating, “we like getting along with everybody.” However, discussions within the U.S. Treasury indicate a more cautious approach, as reported by The Associated Press through an unnamed source. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent allegedly informed Siluanov that economic relief from the United States would be contingent upon Russia ceasing its military actions in Ukraine.
In response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, Champagne stressed the need for a unified front among nations to support the Ukrainian populace during what he described as an escalation of conflict and devastating impacts due to Russian aggression.
On the same day, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed solidarity with Germany after the country accused Russia of orchestrating an explosive drone attack aimed at a Ukrainian cargo plane near Leipzig airport last month. Carney condemned the attack as an egregious act intended to undermine the resolve of Western nations, emphasizing that such attempts would ultimately fail.
Carney reiterated Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine amid the ongoing hostilities, stating firmly that their commitment to assist Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression is steadfast.
