TEMASCALCINGO, Mexico (AP) — A tragic explosion involving pyrotechnic materials occurred during a patron saint festival in Temascalcingo, a municipality in the State of Mexico, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and leaving another 64 injured, as reported by Mexican authorities. The incident took place on Saturday night, near the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church, where the local community had gathered in anticipation of a fireworks display that is an integral part of this religious festival.
Temascalcingo, located approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Mexico City, is home to around 66,000 residents. The explosion took place as hundreds of people were preparing for the fireworks show, adding to the shock and devastation of the event. Currently, the cause of the explosion remains undetermined, prompting the Mexico State Attorney General's Office to initiate an investigation into the incident.
Among the injured, there are reports that two priests were affected by the blast, which underscores the extent of the tragedy impacting the local religious community. In the aftermath of the explosion, video footage circulated on social media, depicting chaotic scenes where dozens of individuals were seen navigating through smoke and debris in search of survivors. This harrowing imagery reflects the immediate panic and desperation felt in the wake of the disaster.
Explosions associated with pyrotechnics are, unfortunately, not uncommon in Mexico, where fireworks play a significant role in various street celebrations and religious festivities. Just under four years ago, a powerful fireworks explosion in a village within the municipality of Huejutla, located in the central state of Hidalgo, injured 17 people, highlighting the inherent risks involved with such cultural practices.
The recent explosion in Temascalcingo adds to the troubling pattern of fireworks-related incidents in the country. With the festival drawing both locals and visitors, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers linked to the use of explosive materials in public celebrations. As investigations proceed, authorities are likely to examine safety regulations and protocols surrounding the use of fireworks in similar events to prevent further tragedies in the future.
