Despite the calls from various quarters for him to resign, FIFA has reiterated that Infantino intends to secure a fourth and final term in office, which would extend his presidency until 2031. A FIFA spokesperson stated, "The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr. Infantino will be standing for re-election."
The backlash against Infantino has garnered significant support from UEFA, the governing body for European soccer. UEFA has expressed a loss of confidence in his leadership, stating that they might consider boycotting FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup. Additionally, several national associations, notably including the English Football Association (FA), have retracted their support for Infantino's bid to be re-elected, further showcasing the unrest within the soccer community.
Infantino's refusal to comment on his future during a recent event, notably the opening of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, has added to the uncertainty surrounding his presidency. When approached by Sky News, he remarked, "There will be a lot to say, but there will be a right place and a right time to say this. It’s not today, it’s not here, but here and today, we are enjoying football."
FIFA has issued an apology for the errors tied to the controversial proposal intended to allow the sale of World Cup profits through a commercial subsidiary. The organization has pledged to ensure that such mistakes do not recur.
